Chuck Schumer and the Democrats had to swallow a bitter pill.
It was another low moment for the Democrat Party.
And Chuck Schumer just admitted this humiliating defeat to Donald Trump.
The deadline for government funding was set to expire on March 14.
House Republicans – with the support of President Trump – passed a six month continuing resolution that froze spending.
This spending freeze and six month continuing resolution created the runway for President Trump and Congressional Republicans to negotiate a budget reconciliation bill that will extend President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, fulfill campaign promises like no tax on tips, and cut trillions in spending.
Democrat Party voters wanted their elected representatives to burn it all down in opposition.
The left demanded Democrats block any funding bill that didn’t restrict the ability of Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from firing bureaucrats and slashing spending.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer initially drew a hard line on opposing the six month continuing resolution.
“Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture,” Schumer declared in a Senate floor speech.
But within 24 hours, Schumer capitulated to Trump.
Schumer announced that he would vote to end a filibuster on the continuing resolution, which sent out the smoke signal that enough Democrats would join him to move the bill to a simple majority vote.
“I believe it is my job to make the best choice for the country to minimize the harms to the American people. Therefore, I will vote to keep the government open and not shut it down,” Schumer announced.
Schumer claimed that a government shutdown would only further empower Donald Trump because Democrats would look like unreasonable fanatics.
“I believe allowing Donald Trump to take even much more power via a government shutdown is a far worse option,” Schumer continued.
A CBS/YouGuv poll showed 54 percent of Americans support DOGE and Schumer knows a shutdown fight over DOGE puts Democrats on the backfoot.
“We want the attention of the American people, not focused on different bills that they would bring to the floor during the shutdown. We’d rather focus on our message, which is beginning to work,” Schumer added.
Donald Trump revelled in Schumer’s surrender and lavished praise on Schumer on social media – knowing full well that would only further enrage the left and inflame the civil war underway in the Democrat Party.
“Congratulations to Chuck Schumer for doing the right thing — Took “guts” and courage! The big Tax Cuts, L.A. fire fix, Debt Ceiling Bill, and so much more, is coming. We should all work together on that very dangerous situation. A non pass would be a Country destroyer, approval will lead us to new heights. Again, really good and smart move by Senator Schumer. This could lead to something big for the USA, a whole new direction and beginning!” Trump posted.
