FBI Director Kash Patel reassured Americans that this was the case when he announced the FBI was investigating the “swatting” spree targeting conservative media figures across the country.
“Swatting” involves calling in a fake hostage crisis situation in the hopes police will respond with a SWAT team (hence the term ‘swatting’) to storm the target’s home and shoot them because they’ve been led to believe the target is holding a gun to an innocent person’s head.
Patel warned the perpetrators that they would be held accountable for their crimes.
“I want to address the alarming rise in ‘Swatting’ incidents targeting media figures. The FBI is aware of this dangerous trend, and my team and I are already taking action to investigate and hold those responsible accountable. This isn’t about politics—weaponizing law enforcement against ANY American is not only morally reprehensible but also endangers lives, including those of our officers. That will not be tolerated. We are fully committed to working with local law enforcement to crack down on these crimes. More updates to come,” Patel wrote on X.
Conservative podcaster Nick Sortor wrote on social media that police nearly kicked the door down at his father’s home and shot him after being the target of a swatting prank.
“A dozen cops attempted to kick my dad’s door in at gunpoint,” Sortor wrote on X. “This is literal f—ing terrorism. And the FBI should treat it as such. Before calling in the swat, this dumbs— sent my sister an email calling me a Nazi, of course. So the motive is clear.”
Sortor was obviously not amused and compared what happened to “attempted murder.”
“This is nothing short of attempted murder. They wanted the police to kill my father,” Sortor continued.
Sortor wasn’t alone in facing these threats on their lives.
Newsweek reported that “social media influencer Gunther Eagleman, radio show host Joe Pagliarulo, and Infowars’ Chase Geiser” were among those swatted.
Swatting is no harmless prank.
A swatting incident at Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s home in December led to a responding police officer getting into a car accident that resulted in a woman’s death.
“On Monday December 9, a Rome Police Department officer was traveling in a personal vehicle en route to take his place with the Bomb Squad on a call. This officer was involved in a traffic accident on Redmond Rd near Walmart which has created significant travel delays around the Norfolk Southern Railroad Tracks,” the Rome Police Department reported on the incident.
Swatting is a serious matter that can lead to lethal consequences for the targets.
Director Patel wants the left to know swatting will also lead to serious legal consequences for those who engage in that behavior.
