Donald Trump demanded that Senate Republicans kill the filibuster and pass the SAVE Act.
But John Thune said the votes just aren’t there.
And now a revolt is brewing inside the GOP, leaving John Thune exposed as the one standing in Trump’s way.
As West Wing Daily reports:
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and his RINO allies are circulating talking points for Republicans to use to deflect from the fact that they are the ones blocking the SAVE Act from passing.
Trump called on Republicans to eliminate the filibuster and pass the SAVE Act by simple majority vote, warning Democrats would do so at the first opportunity and destroy America for good.
“All Republican Senators! Terminate the Filibuster, which the Democrats will do as soon as they get the chance, and PASS THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, and everything else, including the budget and the upcoming debt ceiling. Do it now, before it is too late!!!” Trump posted to Truth Social.
Thune’s talking points claimed Republicans didn’t have the votes to do so.
“I want to pass the SAVE America Act just as much as the President, but we don’t have the votes to pass the SAVE America Act or eliminate the filibuster. If staying in session will somehow change that outcome, then I’m all for it,” the talking points read.
Trump then called on Thune to cancel the August recess to keep the Senate in session until it passed the SAVE Act.
“John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to “leave town” until it passes the Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER, where Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of, including a full and deep-throated SAVE AMERICA ACT, the Budget, and the ever-looming Debt Ceiling disaster, 1929! The Democrats will do it on day one, and can’t believe how lucky they got with this Senate leadership. Remember, stupidity always brings LOSING & DEATH!” Trump wrote on Truth.
Thune’s talking points claimed that wouldn’t change anything.
“But I don’t think staying in session will make more votes appear. We are not going to get a single Democrat to vote for the SAVE America Act, no matter how long we are in session. And we have work to do at home to make sure that we beat the Democrats in November,” the talking points added.
In reality, these talking points amounted to a series of excuses about why Thune refused to do his job as majority leader and pull out all the stops to pass President Trump’s signature election security bill.
“The message seems to be that Republicans support the SAVE America Act but are willing to change absolutely nothing, sacrifice no vacations, and threaten no committee seats to move it forward,” a Republican Senate staffer told the Daily Caller. “A strategy that relies on Democrats suddenly doing the right thing is not a strategy.”
