In blatant disregard of Constitutional Rights, Democrat Senators in Michigan have proposed a bill that would make most independent journalists and free-thinking Americans criminals.
Even though a majority of Americans overwhelmingly support the protection of their rights, some leftist politicians argue the Constitution is flawed and in need of “repair.”
And while such proposed “repairs” are nearly always attempts to silence their opponents, Michigan Senators are taking it to a dangerous level.
In an audacious move, Senate Democrats in Michigan are attempting to muzzle election discourse through the proposed SB 707 bill.
Under SB 707, any individual who dares to make a statement about elections, if deemed intentionally false, could face a $1,000 fine.
An employer of this individual, pulled into the mix for election-related purposes, could also see fines of a punishing $10,000.
The endgame?
To regulate what can be said about the “time, place, or manner of elections,” voter qualifications, criminal voting penalties, and more, aiming to instill fear in those who might otherwise speak out.
The bill rapidly advanced from the majority-Democrat Elections and Ethics Committee on a party-line vote.
Republican state Sen. Ruth Johnson told the The Federalist that her GOP colleagues opted for a “pass” vote – meaning neither for nor against – in a bid to seek greater clarity on the bill’s true intentions.
“The two Republican members passed hoping to get more clarity on the standards that would be used to prove that something is done ‘intentionally and knowingly with intent,'” Johnson highlighted.
A lack of clarity seems to be at the bill’s heart, raising concerns about the power given to government bureaucrats to rule on what is “truth” as opposed to “falsehoods.”
As we’ve seen time and again, government bureaucrats are quick to label facts as false if it fits the political narrative at the time.
Johnson voices a fundamental worry emphasizing, “I don’t want to see someone being prosecuted because they shared or repeated information they maybe didn’t even realize was inaccurate.”
What remains unclear to both sides is the negative repercussions such a bill would have on political discussions and debate.
Will journalists, citizens, and politicians choose to remain silent less they fall victim to a government truth courts?
Already, Michigan’s Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has been on the warpath of so-called “election misinformation,” going so far as to urge citizens to report on their neighbors and friends to government agents.
Moreover, MI Attorney General Dana Nessel has flexed her prosecutorial might by threatening to take legal action against individuals based on their social media activity.
This blatantly unconstitutional bill, HR 707, is barreling towards a Senate vote next month during the “lame duck” session, sparking urgency among those who hold the First Amendment dear.
One of our most foundational freedoms faces an onslaught under the guise of protecting electoral integrity.
Will this bill pass, altering the very fabric of election-related discourse in Michigan, or will the principles of free speech prevail in this eleventh-hour legislative skirmish?
Stay tuned, stay skeptical, and above all, stay free – America depends on it.
