Joe Biden’s walking on thin ice.
Polls show Donald Trump expanding his lead in the wake of the debate and Democrats are in complete disarray.
And Joe Biden said three ugly words that forced Democrats to make this brutal choice.
Most Democrats would secretly love if Joe Biden would just go away.
Polls show the American people think he’s too old and it’s just too high a threshold to overcome.
Democrats also worry that the bottom falling out on Biden will create a tsunami that wipes out the Party’s congressional candidates, allowing Trump to waltz into the White House with healthy majorities in the House and Senate in tow.
Facing calls to drop out, Joe Biden attempted first to hide.
Biden held only two public events in the first days after the debate and spoke from a teleprompter both times.
Biden did no outreach to elected Democrats nor did he sit for any interviews.
Then that began to change in the week after the debate.
Biden dialed into a zoom meeting for campaign staff and sought to reassure them that he was in the race for good.
“Let me say this as clearly as I possibly can — as simply and straightforward as I can: I am running … no one’s pushing me out. I’m not leaving. I’m in this race to the end and we’re going to win,” Biden declared.
“There is no one I’d rather be in this battle with than all of you,” Biden added.
Biden told his staff they would fight for victory.
“So let’s link arms. Let’s get this done. You, me, the vice president. Together,” Biden concluded.
Biden then met with the Democrat Governors in an attempt to quell a rebellion against him since many of the names in the room could see themselves as a viable replacement should Biden leave the race.
Biden accomplished his goal, leaving the meeting with the Governors solidly behind him.
California’s Gavin Newsom said that once he heard Biden say, “I’m all in,” that was good enough for him to support Biden as the nominee.
I heard three words from the President tonight — he’s all in. And so am I.@JoeBiden’s had our back. Now it’s time to have his.

Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer also backed Biden as the nominee.
.@JoeBiden is our nominee. He is in it to win it and I support him.
— Gretchen Whitmer (@gretchenwhitmer) July 4, 2024
Whitmer and Newsom are two of the most talked about Democrat alternatives for Biden.
But their incentives align with supporting Biden. They want to run for President in 2028 and they know there’s no benefit in kneecapping Biden and annoying party activists and donors.
So as long as publicly supporting Biden lines up with their incentives, the harder it will be for other elected Democrats to step forward and demand Biden get out of the race.
