Chuck Schumer’s job is to plot the Democrat Party’s path back to power.
But Schumer got a reality check.
And Chuck Schumer shook his head in despair after this bad meeting.
Michigan Democrat Senator Gary Peters announcing he won’t be seeking re-election created the most high-profile race of the upcoming 2026 election cycle.
Democrats need to flip four seats in order to regain the majority in the Senate.
That’s already a stretch as the Senate map favors Republicans winning the Senate – meaning Democrats would have to win races in states like Texas, Alaska, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Louisiana.
Losing even one seat would snuff out those hopes.
The Michigan race takes on added importance.
With Michigan being one of the most critical battlegrounds on the Presidential map, both parties will be looking for 2028 clues in the 2026 results.
If Democrats wanted to hold the Michigan Senate seat, they’re off to a bad start.
Candidate quality is critical in races like this.
A Senate race in Michigan figures to be the most expensive of the cycle and the parties are looking for candidates with enough name recognition and fundraising ability to clear the field and avoid a bloody primary as well as being able to fund a competitive general election campaign.
On that end, it looks like Democrats have only one option.
And it’s a bad one.
Former Treasury Secretary Pete Buttigieg – who twiddled his thumbs after the train derailment in Easy Palestine, Ohio, and presided over the biggest supply chain meltdown in recent history – is interested in running for Senate in Michigan.
“Pete Buttigieg met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer last week to discuss a possible Senate bid in Michigan, according to two people familiar with the meeting and granted anonymity to describe private conversations,” POLITICO exclusively reported.
“The former Transportation secretary is still undecided about a Senate run in his adopted home state, according to five people familiar with the situation. But the meeting with Schumer was a sign of how seriously he is considering it.”
Buttigieg is a big name in Democrat Party politics.
But he only moved to Michigan just recently.
And when Buttigieg ran for President in 2020, he polled around zero with black voters.
Buttigieg’s lack of support among black voters, record of incompetence in the Biden administration, and status as a carpetbagger all add up to a toxic candidate who will start the race trailing in the polls against the likely GOP candidate, the former Michigan Congressman Mike Rogers.
