AI is changing every facet of life on Earth.
No more so than at the Department of War.
President Trump announced a complete blacklist of the company Anthropic and its Claude AI model after the Department of War and Anthropic couldn’t agree on how the government would use Claude for national security purposes.
“The Left-wing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the Department of War, and force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution. Their selfishness is putting AMERICAN LIVES at risk, our Troops in danger, and our National Security in JEOPARDY,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Therefore, I am directing EVERY Federal Agency in the United States Government to IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology. We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and we will not do business with them again! There will be a six-month phase-out period for Agencies like the Department of War that are using Anthropic’s products, at various levels. ” Anthropics better get their act together, and be helpful during this phase-out period, or I will use the Full Power of the Presidency to make them comply, with major civil and criminal consequences to follow,” Trump added.
“WE will decide the fate of our Country — NOT some out-of-control, Radical Left AI company run by people who have no idea what the real World is all about. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump continued.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei claimed the company had no choice but to resist the government’s demands as the Department of War wanted to use Claude for autonomous weapons targeting and mass surveillance.
The Trump administration then made the blacklist official by designating Anthropic as a “supply chain risk.”
Previously, only companies from Communist China, like Huawei, were labeled as supply chain risks as the government believed using their components would allow China to spy on America and compromise national security.
Anthropic is the first American company ever to fall under this designation, and it means all defense contractors and vendors must certify they don’t use Anthropic’s models.
Calling Anthropic a supply chain risk is an extinction-level event for the company.
Amodei wrote.
Amodei claimed that agreeing to the government’s demands would allow AI to control weapons systems with no human oversight and allow the algorithm to surveil Americans.
“As we stated last Friday, we do not believe, and have never believed, that it is the role of Anthropic or any private company to be involved in operational decision-making—that is the role of the military,” Amodei stated. “Our only concerns have been our exceptions on fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance, which relate to high-level usage areas, and not operational decision-making.”
Many Americans fear they are at the dawn of an age of AI disruption that will wipe out millions of jobs and change life forever.
For some, AI running weapons systems calls back to the nightmare scenario of Skynet envisioned in the Terminator film franchise.
But President Trump believes America’s national security is at risk if countries like China win the AI race.
And President Trump will never let America fall behind.
