Senator John Fetterman wanted to make a challenge.
It represented a fork-in-the-road for the Democrat Party.
And John Fetterman got hit with this ugly surprise after issuing a major dare.
Since Joe Biden face-planted at the debate with Donald Trump and revealed the extent of his cognitive decline, 20 Democrats in the House of Representatives and one Senator – Peter Welch (D-VT) – publicly called for Joe Biden to exit the race.
None of Biden’s efforts at cleaning up his disastrous debate performance – where he gave an equally disastrous interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos and a press conference following the NATO 75th Anniversary celebration – allayed the fears of Democrats who no longer think Joe Biden can win a general election.
Biden’s campaign high command – Mike Donilon, Steve Ricchetti, and Jen O’Malley Dillon – met with Senate Democrats in the hopes of getting them onboard with Biden remaining the candidate.
The meeting turned into a fiasco.
Democrats peppered Biden’s aides with their worries that Biden’s poll numbers would tank the Senate and House races and that Biden was physically and mentally incapable of serving another four years as President.
Biden has one stalwart defender in the Senate.
That is Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman.
At one point in the meeting, POLITICO reported that Fetterman stood and dared his colleagues to go on the record, telling them they would destroy their careers if they tanked Biden’s candidacy.
“You have legacies, too,” Fetterman declared, telling his fellow Democrats history wouldn’t look kindly “if you f*** over a great president over a bad debate.”
Fetterman – and by extension Biden – found out just how few friends they actually had when less than five Democrat Senators raised their hands.
“No more than four people signaled that they were, according to four of the people familiar with the meeting,” POLITICO exclusively reported.
“While not every Senate Democrat was in attendance and some had trickled out of the lunch already, Fetterman, Sens. Chris Coons of Delaware and Tammy Duckworth of Illinois thought Biden should continue,” POLITICO also reported.
But legacy is at the forefront of why Biden is still hanging on in the race.
First Lady Jill Biden and Hunter Biden are digging their heels in and that Joe should fight for the nomination.
“The first family remains committed to the campaign, with first lady Jill Biden and the president’s son, Hunter, both telling confidants that they still believe that the president is the only candidate who can beat Trump, according to the two people familiar,” POLITICO reported.
Jill Biden fears if Joe Biden drops out of the race, his legacy and memory will be that of a senile old man who could barely stop from drooling all over himself in front of 51 million people.
“The first lady has also expressed fear that bowing out would make the Atlanta debate a defining image of her husband’s presidency, an outcome she finds unacceptable, the people said,” POLITICO also reported.
