Chuck Schumer already has his hands full with being overwhelmed on a daily basis by the speed at which Donald Trump has moved to implement his agenda.
But Schumer’s latest headache is one that’s a panic mode event for the Democrat Party.
And Chuck Schumer was sick to his stomach after hearing this scary announcement.
The party out of power usually posts gains in the midterm election.
Their voters are more fired up and the incumbent party is in the White House because its coalition includes more irregular voters that only show up in Presidential years.
That second point is especially true of the GOP where Trump’s base won’t show up for the establishment RINOs who yearn for the days of Mitt Romney, Liz Cheney, and Mitch McConnell running the show.
Democrats had been eying the Senate race in North Carolina where RINO Thom Tillis is up for re-election and RINO Joni Ernst’s potential seat in Iowa as pickup opportunities.
But the Democrat Party’s ability to go on offense in the 2026 midterms just took a blow.
That’s because Democrat Senator Gary Peters of Michigan announced he wouldn’t be seeking a third term.
“After three terms in the House and two terms in the Senate, I believe now is time for me to write a few more paragraphs in my current chapter and then turn over the reins,” Peters stated in a video announcing his decision.
“I will therefore not seek reelection in 2026.”
An open seat in Michigan – one of the premiere Presidential battlegrounds – makes this Senate race the marquee contest on the map.
Adding to the intrigue of this race are its possible candidates.
Super Bowl winning Hall of Fame football coach Tony Dungy is one of the Republicans floated for the race.
Biden administration Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is strongly considering entering the race as well.
“Pete is exploring all of his options on how he can be helpful and continue to serve,” a source close to Buttigieg told Axios.
“He’s honored to be mentioned for this and he’s taking a serious look.”
Buttigieg also put out the perfunctory statement praising Peters for his service which only heightened the speculation that Buttigieg was considering the race.
“Senator Gary Peters has served with great integrity, focus, and expertise. It was a pleasure working with him as Secretary to deliver good policies for our country and key transportation projects in Michigan,” Buttigieg wrote.
But Buttigieg faces two issues.
One, he is a native of Indiana and only recently moved to Michigan.
Carpetbagger allegations tend to stick in Senate races—as Dr. Mehmet Oz found out when John Fetterman pilloried him for being a New Jersey resident in their 2022 Pennsylvania Senate race.
Second is that Buttigieg, a Harvard educated McKinsey consultant, has no appeal to black voters.
Buttigieg was polling around zero percent with black voters in his 2020 Presidential campaign and it’s why his win in the Iowa Caucuses never led to his campaign getting off the ground.
If a Democrat can’t run up the score with black voters in Detroit, then it becomes an obvious uphill fight to victory.
No matter who the candidates are, this race figures to be the standout contest in 2026.
