President Trump signed an executive order to secure mail-in ballots ahead of the 2026 midterms.
A friendly leftist judge blocked it anyway.

Trump’s Mail-In Balloting Executive Order
In March, President Trump signed an executive order instructing the Secretary of Homeland Security to compile a roster of eligible voters for mail-in ballots and send it to the states.
The order also directed the U.S. Postal Service to develop guidelines to secure mail-in ballots, such as specially marked envelopes with unique identifying barcodes.
Trump’s goal was to beef up security and eliminate fraud in mail-in voting ahead of the midterms.
Democrats sued to stop the order.
But the Supreme Court rejected a lawsuit, ruling that the states lacked standing to file the initial suit because the order applied only to federal agencies.
The court, however, admitted this ruling didn’t pass any judgment on the Constitutional merits of Trump’s executive order.
Democrats raced back to a friendly leftist judge who issued a ruling blocking the order on the grounds that it was an unconstitutional infringement on the state’s authority to oversee elections.
“USPS’s mail ballot rule is an unconstitutional attempt to upend mail voting on the eve of an election,” Director of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project Sophia Lin Lakin said of the new lawsuit. “The district court temporarily blocked the rule’s key provision while it decides the request for preliminary relief through an order set to expire within days. Yet President Trump’s administration is running to the Supreme Court anyway. The only emergency here is the one the administration created.”
Trump Takes Mail-In Voting Fight to the Supreme Court
The administration immediately asked the Supreme Court for an emergency ruling lifting the block, arguing that this executive order only applied to federal agencies.
“The rule thus plainly does not seize control of states’ administration of elections,” the administration’s petition to the Supreme Court read. “It simply imposes reasonable preparation requirements for certain election-related mail.”
The administration argued that the lower court block “partially nullifies the Postal Service’s efforts to address the risk that the federal mails will be used to perpetrate voter fraud — a particularly pernicious species of fraud that dilutes the votes of lawful voters.”
Swamping swing states with mass mail-in ballots was how Democrats won in 2020.
Lax rules meant no one was sure if these votes were lawfully cast.
New election integrity rules passed in the aftermath of that election in states like Georgia cracked down on fraud, and President Trump won a second term.
Trump wants Americans to have confidence that only legal votes will count in 2026.
Democrats oppose that effort.
Americans are left asking why, and none of the answers are good.
